Back-to-school season is here, and if you're like most parents, you're juggling supply lists, new shoes, and snack-stock-ups while wondering how this became a full-time job. Don't worry - we've got you. Here are our favorite budget-friendly back-to-school shopping tips, tailored just for our South Charlotte and Union County families.
Shop Your House First
Before you head to Target or Walmart, do a quick home inventory. That drawer stuffed with last year's leftover markers, glue sticks, and barely-touched notebooks might be a hidden gold mine. You'd be surprised how many supplies are still perfectly usable. Pro tip: get the kids involved in sorting through what they already have - it's a great way to get them excited for the new year too.
Stick to the Teacher-Approved List
Don't jump the gun on supply shopping. Some lists floating around online are more "wishlist" than "essentials." Once teacher assignments come out, wait for the first day or two of school (or reach out to the teacher directly) to confirm what's actually needed. You might find you don't need 24 glue sticks after all.
Plan Around a Tax-Free Weekend - If You're Shopping in SC
Here's a quirk worth knowing: North Carolina doesn't currently have a back-to-school sales tax holiday. But if you live in or near York County or make regular trips across the state line, South Carolina does - its tax-free weekend runs the first Friday through Sunday in August (August 7–9, 2026) and covers clothing, shoes, school supplies, and computers, with no price cap. It's a great excuse to combine a Rock Hill or Fort Mill shopping trip with back-to-school errands and stack the savings with store sales.
Visit Local Consignment Sales & Resale Shops
Don't skip the great consignment events around Charlotte. Just Between Friends Charlotte runs seasonal pop-up sales packed with gently used kids' clothing, shoes, backpacks, and lunchboxes at a fraction of retail. Kid to Kid locations around the Charlotte area are also worth a stop for year-round secondhand finds. Keep an eye on our event calendar for consignment sales happening throughout South Charlotte and Union County all season long. Don't know where to start looking? Use Store Pickup and Curbside Deals
Local stores like the Target on Johnston Road, Walmart in Ballantyne, or the Waxhaw and Monroe locations for our Union County families often offer same-day pickup with online-only discounts. This lets you skip the in-store chaos - and those endless "can I get this too?" requests from the backseat crew.
Buy in Bulk and Split with Friends
Stock up at Costco or Sam's Club (Pineville and Monroe both have locations nearby) and split the haul with other school families. You'll save money and avoid a supply closet overflow.
Wait to Buy Activity Gear
Whether it's soccer cleats, gymnastics leotards, or a first violin, hold off on buying the full setup until your child commits past the trial period. Ask around in local parent Facebook groups for secondhand gear, or borrow before you buy - most Charlotte parents are happy to pass things along. Check Local Deal Groups and Buy Nothing Pages
Join Facebook groups like Buy Nothing South Charlotte, Buy Nothing Union County, or local mom groups covering Ballantyne, Waxhaw, and Weddington. These groups are full of families giving away or swapping clothes, supplies, and backpacks. Free is always in the budget.
Say Yes to Hand-Me-Downs
Older siblings, neighbors, cousins - tap into the hand-me-down network. With so many young families moving into South Charlotte and Union County, chances are you already know someone with a slightly older kid who'd love to pass along gently used supplies and clothes.
