8 End-of-Summer Adventures

July 29, 2026

Summer is winding down, but there's still time to squeeze in some good memories before backpacks and bus schedules take over. Whether you've got one free Saturday left or a whole final week before the first bell, here are 8 ways to make the most of it - from local favorites to easy day trips within a couple of hours.

1. Cool Off at Carowinds' Carolina Harbor

If you haven't made it to the waterpark yet this summer, now's the time. Carolina Harbor's wave pool, lazy river, and kid-friendly splash zones are the perfect way to beat the last of the summer heat. Go on a weekday if you can - lines are shorter, and you'll have more time for the good slides before the season wraps up.

Good to know: Combo tickets with Carowinds' main park are worth it if your kids are tall enough for the coasters too - you get a full day of both worlds.  Find discounted ticket HERE

2. Get Outside at the U.S. National Whitewater Center

Whether it's rafting, ziplining, or just letting the kids loose on the ropes courses and climbing walls, the Whitewater Center is one of our area's best local adventures. There's also a free zone with walking trails, a playground, and river access if you're watching the budget - you don't have to buy a full activity pass to enjoy an afternoon there.  Learn more by visiting their website.

3. Cheer On the Charlotte Knights

A Knights game at Truist Field is one of the easiest, most affordable family nights out in Charlotte. Between the between-innings games, the fireworks nights, and the kid-friendly promotions, it's baseball without the pressure of sitting still for nine innings. Grab a ballpark snack, let the kids run around the concourse, and call it a summer send-off.  Find tickets HERE

4. Wander Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden

Just over the county line in Belmont, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is a beautiful, shaded escape for a morning outing. The butterfly house is always a hit with younger kids, and the walking paths are stroller-friendly if you've got a little one in tow. It's a nice, low-key option if your family needs a slower-paced day after a summer of go-go-go.  Their August Event Calendar is full of activities for kids, as well as their adult Summer Date Nights event.

5. Explore Local History at the Museum of the Waxhaws

For our Union County families, the Museum of the Waxhaws is a hidden gem worth a visit before school starts. It's a small, manageable museum for younger attention spans, and it's a great way to sneak in a little local history before the "what did you do this summer" essays start rolling in.

6. Catch the Soccer Buzz at Bank of America Stadium

If your family loves soccer, this is a big summer for Charlotte. With Charlotte FC hosting a full slate of matches and citywide soccer energy building around this year's events at Bank of America Stadium, it's worth checking the schedule for a family-friendly match or fan event before summer wraps up. Even non-soccer kids tend to get swept up in the stadium atmosphere, the noise, and the pre-game fan zones. Find the perfect day to go HERE

7. Day Trip: Chimney Rock & Lake Lure

About two hours northwest, Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure make for a great overnight or ambitious day trip. Hike to the top for sweeping mountain views, then cool off with a boat tour or a swim in the lake. It's a nice change of scenery if your family's been sticking close to home all summer, and the drive itself through the foothills is half the fun.

8. Anne Springs Close Greenway (Fort Mill, SC)

For something closer - just across the state line - Anne Springs Close Greenway offers miles of trails, a lake, and even a working farm area for younger kids. It's an easy half-day trip that doesn't require a ton of planning, and it's a great low-cost way to get the whole family outside one more time before the routine of homework and after-school activities kicks back in.

However you spend these last few weeks, we hope you soak up the slower pace before the school year sweeps everyone back into routine. Here's to one last great adventure (or eight) before the buses start rolling!
